The Alumni

Brief History of AHS

Aylesbury High School opened its doors for the first time in September 1959.  Until then, the girls had been educated with the boys in the Grammar school across the road; now they had a spanking new building all of their own!

The first Headmistress was Miss Joan Camp.  She still lives in Buckinghamshire and remembers her first speech.  She had three main aims which were: that the school be known for its academic excellence; that the school be known for its service to the community and that it creates and maintains international relations.  These three aims are still being achieved to this day.

Miss Camp was headmistress for 16 years, and when she met up with the 59ers (the girls who started as first formers the year the school opened) in April 2010 she still remembered many of their names.

Miss Margaret Lambert took over as Headteacher in 1975.  Her proudest moment was fighting and winning to have a technology block in the girls’ school to rival that of the boys’.  She succeeded, and the girls now had specially built rooms for drama, textiles and sculpture with workshops for metal and woodwork.

Ms Jane Wainwright succeeded in 1992.  She had a determination to make positive improvements to the school which resulted in it becoming an “International School” and becoming language-oriented, eventually to become a Language College.  Like her predecessors, she had high aspirations for the pupils.

Current Headteacher Mr Alan Rosen has seen much new building on the premises.  The new Sports Hall and admin extension to the main building have meant that the school is now 3 times the size it was when it opened 50 years ago.

Memories and photos

Since the online Alumni was founded in 2008 it has proved exceptionally popular with old girls.  They have sent in pictures of their time here at the school over the past 50 years.  Have a look at the photo galleries at the bottom of the page.

50th Anniversary

2009/2010 was the 50th Anniversary of Aylesbury High School and we celebrated in a variety of ways.

The 59ers Lunch

The weekend of April 24 2010 was a very special one.  About 40 59ers (thanks to Jenny Puddefoot née Stanford and Hilary Sweeting née French) all got together.  Firstly lunch at the school, guided tours and then tea with some of the staff from those days, including Miss Camp.  Mr Chaplin, Miss Peggy and Miss Nan Cattell, Miss White (now Mrs Newman) and many others arrived to see what 50 years had done to those fresh faced 11 year olds from all those years ago!

The Garden Party

Took place on a less than perfect Saturday 8 May 2010, but the drizzle in the sky did not dampen the spirits and enthusiasm of everyone who came.  And there were so many!  Some of the highlights of the day included:

  • Stalls all over the school organised and run by current students by form.  All the profits were divided between the forms’ own charity and the school 6th Form Fund. A remarkable diversion of ideas included “Sponge the Teacher”, “Crockery Smashing” and many others
  • Tea in the dining room with the most delicious selection of home made cakes
  • A specially written on-the-day play made up from memories of old girls
  • A community choir singing hit songs from 1959 and 2009 respectively
  • Laser clay pigeon shooting

..and there was much more!

The Grand Ball

The year’s celebrations culminated at the Grand Ball on Saturday 19 June at the lovely Oxford Belfry hotel.  A delicious dinner was preceded by a champagne reception where old girls met with olds friends and current staff.  After dinner – dancing to the amazing 'Down for the Count', a jazz and soul band made up of former AHS and AGS pupils!  The raffle had awesome prizes – a notebook computer, a light aircraft flight, a sumptuous hamper!  Everyone had a great time and it was a lovely end to a great year of celebrations.

The 50th Anniversary Fund

The 50th Anniversary fund was formed to help raise money for the new much-needed Sixth Form block.  Despite the difficult financial times we are in, we now have raised enough for the building, which will start very soon.  The Fund hasn’t closed, though – every bit we continue to raise will go towards furnishings, equipment etc.  If you would like to help, please contact Keith Marshall on 01296 388202 or kmarshall@ahs.bucks.uk.
