AHS Athletes County Champions

Congratulations to the Junior and Intermediate Athletics teams who both triumphed at the County Cup on Thursday in appalling weather! The girls competed at Stoke Mandeville Stadium, aquitting themselves extremely well, despite facing snow showers at one point. We wish them luck for the Regionals.

We have been delighted to be able to support the appeal to raise money for local pupil, Alex Novakovic, whose family are trying to raise £255000 to fund life-saving treatment for him in Boston.

Today, the school held a 'Wear a Hat for Alex' day and we were pleased to be able to take a cheque for over £2400 to Alex's school this afternoon.

Following in the footsteps of the under-19 netballers who came 5th in the recent National Finals, our under-13 basketball team played in Exeter today and beat their opponents by one point in extra time to qualify for the 'final 4' national Finals. AHS Inside The White House

Read Highlights at the end of this term to hear how AHS Sixth Form students had a surprise visit to the inside of the White House during their trip to Washington DC.

The photograph below shows the students and staff with Ronnie Cho, Associate Director of the Office of Public Engagement at the White House and close associate of Obama, having worked on his election campaign in 2007.

Writing to Mr Ochiltree after the trip, Mr Cho heaped praise on the students he met, writing 'I cannot say enough about how impressive your students are. I meet with hundreds of people every year but few demonstrate the kind of deep understanding of American government coupled with a thoughtful analysis of how the dots connect politically. It wasn't simply a display of rote memorization of facts about our institutions but a very sophisticated grasp of how they all interact and impact the lives of the people today which of course is the most important thing.'

Paralympian Gemma Visits AHS

We were delighted to welcome Gemma Collis back to AHS this week to talk to the whole school in assemblies about her recent experiences representing GB at the Paralympic Games. Gemma, who left the school in 2011, did not let her diagnosis with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy in her teens dampen her determination to compete at an Olympic Games. Students and staff have been inspired by her story and her reminder to us all to 'view obstacles we meet as hurdles to be jumped over and not barriers.' We wish Gemma all the best in her determination to rise to the top of her sport and secure a medal in Rio!

National Finals for Inter Girls Swim Team: a perfect start to the AHS Sporting Year

The Inter Girls (Years 10/11) swim team produced an awesome display at the Division 10 qualifiers for the National finals. The top 16 teams nationally qualify for the finals to be held in Coventry in November 2012. Competing against top teams from Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, the Aylesbury High teams produced Olympic-style performances.

The freestyle relay of Charlotte Evans, Abbie Haward, Cerys King and Emily Martin dominated the pool and event recording a time of 1.55.73. Their swim was only 6 tenths of a second away from breaking the 5 year old record. The time qualifies the team in 4^th place nationally, one place ahead of Millfield School.

The medley relay of Charlotte (back crawl), Abbie (breaststroke), Emily (butterfly) and Jess Payne (front crawl) again dominated the qualifying event, recording a time of 2.08.57. Again, their swim was only 6 tenths of a second away from breaking the 6 year old record. The time qualifies the team in 3rd place nationally, only surpassed by the two specialist swim schools in Plymouth College (of Tom Daley fame) and Kelly College.

The Junior Team of Year 9s Anna Henderson, Finnley Whitbread, Charlotte Chui and Year 8’s Rosalind Fell were ranked 9^th out of 24 medley teams at the Division 10 championships and 63rd nationally out of 226 teams. In the freestyle relay, the girls’ time ranked them just inside the top 100 teams nationally out of 228 teams. This was a fine performance, as some of the team were competing at this level for the first time for the school.

Congratulations to all the swimmers who competed at the gala in Watford and especially to the Inter Girls team who are the first AHS swim team to qualify in both relays for the national finals. We are proud of you!

Sixth Form Centre, History Department and Library Opening

On Monday 8 October, the school's new facilities were opened with a visit by eminent historian and broadcaster, Dominic Sandbrook. After speaking to A Level students on the subject of Post-War Britain in the new Sixth Form Centre, he met guests, staff, governors and students in the brand new Library, before officially declaring the buildings open. Ski Success

Congratulations to the AHS Ski Team, Anna Henderson, Megan Riley, Klara Hommel and Isobel East who recently came a maginificent third in the English Schools Ski Association National Championships. Competing in the Uner 19 category (the girls are in Years 7, 9, 11 and 13) the team was helped by Anna Henderson's individual first place overall and will go on to the British Schools Championships in Wales next month. Well done!

Students celebrate GCSE successes

Year 11 students at Aylesbury High School have excelled in this year’s exam results. They improved significantly on last year’s total points score and, as well as taking large numbers of GCSEs, about one third of students included an AS or a full A Level in their results.

The headlines are:

70% of GCSE grades were A* or A. 48 students managed to gain A* and A grades in every subject that they took.

All students (100%/181) achieved 5 or more A*-C grades.

All students gained two A*-C grades in English and, unusually, two in Maths as well (as we are piloting a scheme where students sit a GCSE in Methods and a GCSE in Applications of Maths)

47 students took an AS in General Studies and 13 took a full A Level in World Development

65 students pioneered the new HPQ course, in either digital production or creative design

Well done to students and staff for these results. The range of qualifications this year is really impressive, with Year 11 students achieving success at GCSE in around thirty subjects. This year group has managed a record set of results and the vast majority will start their A Level courses at AHS in two weeks’ time with a lot of pride in what they have achieved and great confidence for the future.

U16 British Girls' Chess Champion

After a week's tournament at the British Chess Championships in North Shields in July Chantelle Foster is now the British U16 Girls' Champion having won the title with an excellent 4.5/7 points in a mixed section. Congratulations to Chantelle!

Year 13 students celebrate another record year

We are celebrating another record year of A level results, with almost 50% of grades at A*/A and many individual successes amongst the two hundred students.

96% of the results were at grades A* to C, and 53 students (27%) gained A and A* grades in every A level they took. One student, who will be going to University College, London, to study Medicine, managed an amazing 5 A levels and 4 further AS levels, all at A or A*.

Once again, the girls at Aylesbury High continue to buck national trends, with around 60% of students taking at least one science or maths subject. Nine students will be heading to Oxford or Cambridge and fifteen have gained places on highly competitive courses in medicine, veterinary science, dentistry and architecture. Many others gained places on their first choice of university course or will be using their grades as a passport to exciting gap years, either abroad or in much sought-after internships.

I would like to congratulate the girls on these great results and wish them every success in the future. This year group not only worked hard to gain these qualifications but also undertook community service in Aylesbury and further afield, went on exchanges, trips and expeditions in the UK and around the world, and had great success in the performing arts and sports. We will miss them!

AHSA Ball

The School Hall was transformed on Saturday evening as parents and staff dined and danced the night away. They were entertained by talented AHS and AGS musicians and raised a significant amount of money for the school (still to be finally totalled up). Regional Athletics Success

In the South East Regional Athletics Final held in Guildford this week, the Junior Girls team won with a great score of 399. The Inter girls came 5th in their competition in a close fought battle, where there were only 37 points between all 6 teams. There were some outstanding performances and personal bests in both teams and the girls were, as usual, a credit to the school and their families. They will now be competing at the Nationals Finals in Chelmsford on Saturday 30 June. Well done!

Year 8's Grade 8 Success

Congratulations to Alex Ridout 8W who has recently passed Grade 8 Trumpet with Distinction, scoring 139 marks. She dropped only two marks in total in her three pieces, which, as any musician will tell you, is an impressive feat when performing under the pressure of an examination.

Those who attended the Joint AGS and AHS concert at St Mary's Church earlier in the year will have heard Alex playing a movement of Haydn's Trumpet Concerto; this was one of many outstanding individual performances in an evening where high quality musicianship was demonstrated throughout.

Year 9 Maths Students Inspire Younger Girls

Twenty Year 9 Maths students visited Turnfurlong Junior School last week to take part in a series of workshops for pupils from Years 3 to 6. The aim of the event was to use AHS students to help inspire and motivate younger girls in their numeracy studies. Speaking about the event, Mrs Grimmette described how well the AHS girls worked with the Junior School pupils. Their leadership skills were impressive, and, through having to think more deeply about problems in order to explain them well to the youngsters, they were developing their own maths at the same time. As you can see from the photos below, they took the task seriously but all had fun at the same time.

A further series of visits to Primary Schools is planned after Half Term when teachers will be delivering workshops to Year 5 classes and AHS students will be returning to their former schools to deliver circle time sessions on the transition to Secondary School.

Open Mornings Announced

Parents of students in Year 3 and above are invited to visit the school on one of two Open Mornings later this term. They take place on Thursday 28 June and Monday 2 July.

Doors open at 9.15am when the Head will speak in the Main Hall. Parents will then be taken on a guided tour of the school by students. Tours will allow you to see the work students are engaged in and to experience the unique atmosphere of Aylesbury High School. At the end of the tours there will be a chance to meet other senior members of staff.

National Selection for Chantelle

Congratulations to Chantelle Foster 10C who has been selected by the England Chess Federation to represent England at the European Youth Chess Championships in Prague in August. This is her fourth International Selection for a major championships in three years and she is looking forward to playing for England again in the Under 16 Team.

Activity Day at AHS - 29 March

Whilst Years 7, 8 and 12 were out of school visiting a temple in Neasden, the National Gallery and the UCAS convention respectively, the rest of the school was a hive of activity. Year 9 experienced China Day; Year 10 put on international activities for Aston Clinton School pupils here and did the same at Turnfurlong Infants and Stocklake Park School; Year 11 had a day of revision activities and Year 13 had a day entitled "Moving on and making a Difference", which began with a visit by Viscount Younger as part of the Peers in Schools initiative. Sophie wins Future Chef!

Students Organise Sport Relief Mile

Year 10 students organised a Sport Relief mile for staff and students at lunch time on Friday. Hundreds turned out to run, many in fancy dress, to raise funds for the charity. The event was organised as part of one Year 10 group’s Sports Leaders Award, an award all students achieve during their time at the school. £467.01 was raised - well done to all involved!

Finnley Whitbread Wins Bronze

Congratulations to Finnley Whitbread, 8H, who continued her successful year in Rowing, winning Bronze in the Uner 13 class at the British and European Indoor Rowing Championships at the weekend. She rowed an amazing 791m in 3 minutes, only 8 metres behind the winner. The event took place at the University of Nottingham Sports Centre and saw competitors from around Europe competing at Adult and Junior levels.

U19 Netball Team Reach Semi Finals of Nationals

The U19 Netball Team played superbly at the National Finals in Basildon today, Saturday 17 March. Getting through to the Semi-Finals unbeaten, they narrowly lost to the eventual winners 16-15. Congratulations to a superb squad of players who played their hearts out and did AHS proud; well done to Miss Storey for coaching them to such success, and maintaining her calm (almost); thank you to Mrs Frith for scoring all day and being there for the team throughout and many thanks to the large and vociferous team of supporters who made the journey and cheered them on.

Talented technology students win Rotary Tournament

Congratulations to all our teams who performed so well in the 2012 Rotary Technology Tournament on 27 February at Aylesbury College.

In the Intermediate category, Emily Dodd, Emily Thirkettle, Holly Ellis and Amy Haarburger came first in the Key Stage 4 challenge, winning £25 each and £100 for AHS.

Lydia Knight, Rhiannon Sims, Charlotte Cross and Abbie Haward were awarded third place, winning £10 each.

Heather Harrison, Katja Pazik, Rajas Barve and Shifa Bangi won the Key Stage 3 challenge, with Amelia Lincoln, Hannah Thorndyke, Anna Dickenson-Lomas and Imogen Knight placed second. Lauren Clemas, Emily Conroy, Natasha Goodwyn and Georgina Hawkins are also to be congratulated in achieving fourth place. The Key Stage 3 team won £140 between them and £100 for the school.

The girls can be seen in action in a photograph on page 5 of the Bucks Herald this week (29.2.12).

AHS celebrates Karneval

Aylesbury High School students spent last Tuesday celebrating Mardi Gras in the school’s Library and International Centre. Sue Stanbury, our Librarian, knew that the students were studying ‘Karneval’ as a topic in German which led to the decision to put on this activity at lunch time. The girls enjoyed creating some spectacular masks and learnt about an international tradition into the bargain.

Procedure in the event of bad weather

Under exceptional circumstances we may have to close the school. Examples might be extreme weather or a failure of our heating.

If it is possible that the school will be affected, the first place to look is the home page of this website. In bad weather, we would do our best to make a decision about closure by 7 am so that those with longer journeys can find out the position before travelling.

Please do not ring the school switchboard in these circumstances as the definitive information will always be on the website.

We may send out Schoolcomms messages but that would depend on the circumstances and time of day.

Any closure will also appear on the Bucks CC website:

Safer Internet Day February 7 2012

Tuesday February 7 2012 is Safer Internet Day. During the week, the students will be viewing videos about this topic in assembly. CEOP, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre, who produce these videos, have also organised a programme of activities aimed at parents. They have produced a tongue-in-cheek trailer about activities on this day which can be seen by clicking here.

On 7 February, this will be followed by the release of 'The Parents and Carers Guide to the Internet', an entertaining and light-hearted look at what it takes to be an online parent. This can be viewed using the same link.

With interviews from experts including Prof. Tanya Byron and Dr. Linda Papadopoulos, industry players like Facebook and Moshi Monsters and, most importantly, children themselves, this TV-style show aims to answer all of the tricky questions parents may be afraid to ask. The CEOP team will be available to interact with parents and carers from 6 to 9pm on Tuesday 7 February to discuss the challenges they face as their children grow up online by posting on the ClickCEOP Facebook fan page, tweeting @CEOPUK or including #parentsguide in their posts on Twitter.

U19 netball team in national finals

Congratulations to the U19 netball team who became Southern regional champions on Saturday 28 January. We wish them the best of luck at the national finals on 17 March.

ESAA English Schools Cross Country Cup 2011 National Final

On Saturday 2 December 144 girls in 24 teams took part in the National Finals at Princethorpe College, Rugby. The AHS Inters team was led by Hannah Morton who had come second in the junior girls' race in last year's competition. Over a challenging 1 3/4 mile course, Hannah was in the leading pack and was frequently mentioned by the race commentator. Despite being a year younger than many of the leading pack, Hannah produced an amazing race to achieve 2nd place overall....WOW! She was closely followed home by Year 10 Rosanna Evans who achieved her best placing at national finals to come 19th. This is a tremendous achievement for a non-club runner. The team's determination was fantastic and Sophie Hawkins 90th, Emily Martin 93rd, Anouska Stahlmann 104th and late reserve Kate Reed 133rd achieved 12th place overall. The girls were a credit to the school - congratulations!

Junior (Y7/8) Girls Team - 9th Best Team in the Country

For 5 out of 6 of the team this was their second national finals. The team of 5 year 8's and one year 7 have the potential to target 4 National Finals...no mean feat! After becoming Eastern Region champions, the AHS team were ready to race. The team was lead home by Eliza Taswell Fryer in an impressive 23rd place. Flying in behind her was Charlotte Evans in 37th, who is improving with every race this season. This team like to pack well and they did not disappoint with Georgie Moss 59th, Imogen Andrews 60th and Bronwen Reed 64th. Rebecca Ashworth in 98th completed a fine day at the races. This team have set their standards very high and are already planning their attack on this competition for next season. Many thanks to the reserves and supporters (Marguerite Pope, Jasmine Kowebka, Kate Jenkinson, Helena Rowland) and team coaches Charlie and Tash Cornwell. All the parent supporters and teachers were extremely proud of your efforts on the day. It was a delight to be one of a few schools who had both teams at the finals. Congratulations!

Little Shop of Horrors

Little Shop of Horrors was this year’s joint production and took place at AGS at the end of November. For four nights, the superb cast and crew thrilled and entertained audiences and displayed the talent and commitment which students at the two schools have in such abundance. With a complex set and props including the Man-Eating plant Audrey II used in the West End production of the show, Walton Road saw a truly professional production. It was a memorable experience for our students who took part - congratulations to all who performed and those behind the scenes. We would also like to record our thanks to the staff in the front office at AHS for ticket sales and assisting with communication and the staff at AGS who worked so hard to put the show together.

Uniform consultation - update

Thank you once again to all parents, students and staff who gave us some feedback on the uniform samples at the start of term. As you might expect, the feedback did not show us unequivocally which 'suit' to go for. We have therefore been in talks with one supplier who is going to produce samples of the kind of jacket and skirt most parents, staff and students wanted. To avoid making a mistake by introducinig it too soon before teething troubles have been spotted, we are proposing to trial the uniform with a selection of girls only next year, with a view to its introduction for Year 7 in 2013. Once we have new samples, we will arrange another opportunity for these to be viewed.

AHS students at the Model United Nations

Ten Year 9 students took part in a Model United Nations project which involved them working alongside students from four other local secondary schools throughout the Spring and Summer of 2011. Most students took on the roles of UN delegates from countries around the world; some represented press organisations such as the BBC and Al-Jazeera. All were paired with students from different schools and worked online to prepare position-papers, speeches and possible resolutions before the day. As well as winning awards for individual performances, our students worked exceptionally hard to take on demanding roles and developed a good understanding of the UN's role in global governance. Success in national cookery competitions

Well done to Evie Towersey, Sophie Copping, Katherine Ferris, Bony Roy and Hannah Isherwood who were all selected as regional finalists in the 2011 Make It With Mince competition. On 16 November the girls had to cook their recipe for James Martin and the other judges in an exciting cook-off against 7 other students from across the region. The dishes were judged on originality, cooking skills, presentation, and of course taste!

Congratulations to Sophie, who came first, Evie who came second and Bony, who came third. Sophie, who won an ipod touch and £200 of equipment is now in the running to win the national competition.

On Friday 18 November Sophie also won the Aylesbury heat of the Future Chef competition. We wish her luck for the regional heat in February, for which she will be mentored by the head chef at Hartwell House.

Rehearsal Schedule

Rehearsals for our production of 'Little Shop of Horrors' are well underway and all cast and crew are looking forward to the peformances on Tuesday 29 November - Friday 2 December at 7.00 pm in the AGS School Hall.

Below is a file containing the updated general rehearsal schedule so the cast and crew can plan ahead. Detailed call sheets go up on noticeboards at AGS and AHS each week and because changes to this published timetable are sometimes required, pupils are asked to check the noticeboard regularly.
